Line Problems
DISCONNECTS : Being disconnected from the Internet is frustrating, especially if you were doing something important. There are several things that we have found here that apply to disconnects. 1. Microsoft's Outlook Express mail package - Most of our members use Outlook Express, so this one has cropped up more than once. In Outlook Express there is a setting that says "Hang up after sending and receiving mail". If this gets checked, as soon as you enter Outlook Express and get your mail, it hangs up the modem!!! This is easy to fix - bring up Outlook Express, click on Tools, click on Options, click on Connections. Be sure that the box "Hang up after sending and receiving" is NOT checked. 2. Call Waiting - If you have Call Waiting on the same line that you use for the Internet, all kinds of problems arise. Usually, if someone calls you, you are immediately knocked off the Internet. There is a code to "Cancel Call Waiting" during your session on the Internet.

'Party Lines and "Number, Please?"' by Darryl Manzer.
[ SCVHISTORY.COM HOME ] [ WATCH SCV HISTORY SHOWS ] [ NEXT HISTORICAL SOCIETY EVENT ] Party Lines and 'Number, Please?' By DA Published in The Signal, 3-13-2005. [ RETURN TO DARRYL MANZER INDEX ] We live in a world of numbers. It used to be worse. 8753M3. EM73725. In the SCV, you had to remember those numbers, or ones like them, just to make a pho And when you made that phone call, you never got a recording. You always got a real, live, human voice. "Number, please?" On Newhall Avenue near Market Street, there is a little piece of property shaped like a triangle. At one time, that land held the whole valley in its hands. It was the telephone company. It was where the operators worked. If you wanted information on just about anything you could get it there. And they wouldn't let you make stupid calls. One time, I wanted to talk to a neighbor just across the street and was told to walk over and talk to him so I wouldn't tie up the line for any important calls.
