Nokia, Sanyo Plan to Set Up Cdma Plant" Finnish mobile phone manufacturer Nokia and Japanese technology giant Sanyo plan to set up a CDMA mobile handset plant in Brazil, a Nokia spokesperson confirmed to BNamericas. The two companies aim to gain leadership in Brazil's mobile phone market with the new CDMA factory, Timo Ihamuotila, Nokia's manager for CDMA phones, was reported as saying by business daily Valor Econômico. Having signed a letter of intent to merge their CDMA mobile operations, Nokia and Sanyo expect to have a 20% share of Brazil's CDMA market, hot on the heels of the current market leader LG with 22%, Valor quoted Ihamuotila as saying. The new joint venture will have a good chance to become the main company for the CDMA standard in a short time, according to Ihamuotila. The final agreement to create a joint venture between Nokia and Sanyo is expected to be signed before June in San Diego, USA. The companies will then undertake an integration process in the third quarter of 2006, he said. Globally, the CDMA standard accounts for one fifth of all mobile phones. However, in Brazil the only operator that uses CDMA technology is the country's largest cell phone operator Vivo. Recent reports indicate that Vivo expects to purchase 4.1 million CDMA phones. UTStarcom Inks CDMA Handset Deal By Susan Rush WirelessWeek - July 20, 2005 China Unicom has placed a call to UTStarcom to deliver 250,000 CDMA handsets. Financial terms of the contract were not revealed. UTStarcom has agreed to deliver 250,000 C1160 CDMA 1X handsets to the operator. The companies already have an existing frame agreement, but the deal represents the first delivery of CDMA handsets to China Unicom, which has more than 30 million customers. The C1160 features 12-note polyphonic ringtones, three hours of talk time, SMS predictive text capability and a removable user identity module. The C1160 is not the only handset UTStarcom is offering to the CDMA market. This year, the company introduced the CDM-7000 series to the North American market. Earlier this month, UTStarcom inked $85.2 million worth of PAS handset contracts with China Telecom Corporation (CTC). Using UTStarcom's IP next-generation softswitching technology, the PAS solution is designed to enable operators to extend their fixed-line networks with feature-rich wireless services.
