iPhone: iPhone in Canada: Could it by Bell Mobility with a CDMA iPhone?

iPhone: iPhone in Canada: Could it by Bell Mobility with a CDMA iPhone? 23 JAN iPhone in Canada: Could it by Bell Mobility with a CDMA iPhone? Posted by Stephane Dion There is a rumor right now about the fact that Rogers Wireless could be the selected carrier for the iPhone in Canada. I don’t think we can actually call that shot on the base of that thin rumor. Yes, Rogers is the only coast to coast GSM network in Canada but it is also the toughest telecom company to work with, as a client “and” as a partner or provider. Building a CDMA version of the iPhone is not necessarily the biggest challenge that Apple has to face. Depending on what platform the phone was originally designed, a CDMA version of the device could be very easy to release. The integration of the iPhone on a carrier’s network can’t be done like a normal iPhone. Changes need to be done at the carrier’s level. Bell Mobility is more aggressive than Rogers for customer acquisition and may be more willing to make the changes needed by the iPhone. I do agree with the rumor that sticking with GSM is a better choice than CDMA.

Microsoft Unveils Smartphone and Pocket PC Software for CDMA Networks | BestStuff

Microsoft Unveils Smartphone and Pocket PC Software for CDMA Networks | BestStuff Microsoft Unveils Smartphone and Pocket PC Software for CDMA Networks Home Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) today announced the availability of its Windows Powered Smartphone and Pocket PC software for CDMA and broadband CDMA (1xRTT) networks. The new release delivers the same compelling Pocket PC and Smartphone software available for GSM/GPRS networks. Now CDMA-focused device manufacturers and mobile operators can ready Smartphone and Pocket PC products for market delivery. Building on its strategy of providing flexible and broadly-compatible software for wireless computing customers, Microsoft is empowering mobile operators, device manufacturers and developers to bring the power and versatility of wireless Windows Powered smart devices to CDMA subscribers. This software release opens the door to new revenue opportunities, greater flexibility and a larger marketplace. Microsoft expects the final Pocket PC Phone Edition and Smartphone products for CDMA networks to become available later this year. Microsoft's investment in CDMA is in response to the technology's growth both in the United States, where CDMA is the most widely deployed network, and abroad, where CDMA adoption has increased 31 percent since last year.* "Microsoft recognizes that our device manufacturer and mobile operator customers use different network technologies; with the recent growth of worldwide CDMA subscribers, the time is right for us to support this key technology," said Juha Christensen, corporate vice president of the Mobile Devices Division at Microsoft. "With CDMA support for the Smartphone and Pocket PC, Microsoft hopes to ignite innovation and business opportunity, and delight users with smart, wireless computing on any network." Device manufacturers and mobile operators can now take advantage of the rich functionality, customization and flexibility of Microsoft's Smartphone and Pocket PC software to deliver new customer benefits such as rich media, personal and corporate e-mail services, and instant messaging. Today, more than ever, developers of Windows can extend their expertise and applications to Windows Powered smart devices, knowing that the marketplace for wireless Pocket PC and Smartphone-based products will grow substantially with the completion of this CDMA software. Microsoft has been working closely with leading CDMA companies that expressed their support for this announcement. "With the potential growth of mobile computing and dynamic multimedia services on the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network, we look forward to being able to offer our customers the advanced data services enabled by Microsoft's Windows Powered software for CDMA networks," said John Garcia, senior vice president of sales and distribution for the PCS Vision of Sprint. "As wireless handsets evolve to offer richer applications and greater Internet-browsing capabilities and to further meet the needs of consumers' fast-paced lifestyles, the availability of powerful, dependable software to support these advanced features is critical," said Peter Skarzynski, senior vice president of the wireless terminals division at Samsung. "Samsung is pleased to be working with Microsoft to bring new CDMA devices, such as our i700, to market in the first half of 2003.
