Code division multiple access (CDMA) is a form of multiplexing (not a modulation scheme) and a method of multiple access that does not divide up the channel by time (as in TDMA), or frequency (as in FDMA), but instead encodes data with a special code associated with each channel and uses the constructive interference properties of the special codes to perform the multiplexing. CDMA also refers to digital cellular telephony systems that make use of this multiple access scheme, such as those pioneered by Qualcomm, and W-CDMA by the International Telecommunication Union or ITU.

And while there are some complex variations, as Stephen mentions, on a more surface level, each technology offers distinct advantages to consumers. GSM is the dominant cell phone technology globally. GSM is the standard in Europe, but it's also present in North and South America, Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Caribbean. So GSM is a much better choice for global travelers who want to take their phone when they go abroad. GSM phones also use SIM cards , which make it much easier to switch your phone number and contacts list between two handsets. CDMA is used in fewer regions around the world, but it has a very strong footprint in the United States. In fact, its national coverage area here is larger than GSM when you take into account analog networks. Though they won't be around forever, analog networks provide better coverage in rural areas.

TD-CDMA Mobile Broadband Router Debuts By Susan Rush WirelessWeek - December 12, 2005 In an effort to further advance the UMTS TD-CDMA market, IPWireless teamed with Netgear to develop a UMTS TD-CDMA mobile broadband router. The router, according to the companies, is designed to enable operators to integrate UMTS TD-CDMA wireless broadband access with Wi-Fi and Ethernet technologies. The goal of the integration is to ease the creation of mobile, portable and stationary hot spots, the companies assert. UMTS TD-CDMA is the 3GPP standard for high-speed wireless data, offering speeds similar to those achieved with a DSL connection. Specifically, the Netgear UMTS TD-CDMA Mobile Broadband router features WLAN built-in 802.11g and mobile broadband access with UMTS TD-CDMA; firewall security; and four 10/100 Mbps auto-sensing LAN ports. IPWireless has been on a roll as of late, attracting several deals for its UMTS TD-CDMA equipment. In November, IPWireless announced Alcatel planed to use its UMTS TD-CDMA equipment as part of a broadband wireless network trial in Jakarta with netZAP. In October, Orange announced plans to use IPWireless' UMTS TDD in a trial based in Slovakia. The agreement represented an extension of a partnership between the two companies involving a similar network trial in France. A few months earlier in June, T-Mobile Czech Republic announced plans to use IP Wireless' UMTS TDD technology to power a wireless broadband network launch in the Czech Republic.
