Chapter 3: Antenna Theory
Chapter 3: Antenna Theory Prior to the design phase of the project, extensive research into the theory behind the operation of all three antennas was completed. This was done to ensure a full understanding of the functionality of each antenna so the design process could be more efficient and effective. Within the research phase it was important to clearly identify the variables that would affect the radiation pattern and impedance matching of the antenna. 3.1. Yagi-Uda Antenna The Yagi-Uda Antenna is a widely used antenna design due to its high gain capability, low cost and ease of construction. It consists of a dipole arranged with various parasitic elements. There are two types of parasitic elements that can be used to change the radiation pattern, they are: a. A Reflector called thus due to the fact that it appears to reflect radiation from the driver. b. One or more Directors whose function is to direct radiation from the driver in the direction of the director Generally the reflector will be 5% longer than the driven element (ie dipole) and the directors will be 5% shorter. The dipole will be directly driven from the feed network, whereas the parasitic elements achieve excitation by near field coupling from the driven element.
